Janicke - The Back Story

I was born in Norway, raised in Adelaide, lived in Melbourne for 16 years and I now reside in Geelong.
I have been creating art my whole life but it wasn't until 2009 that I took a leap of faith, quit my teaching job and went head first into my art. There has been no clear path or set of directions; however, I continue to strive for success and artistic fulfillment.

Janicke - The Artist
My art work is interpretive and modern combining textures, patterns and intense colours to create responses to my environment and memory. Colour is dripped, sprayed, scraped, splashed and printed by hand onto canvas or paper and then blocked out with bold colours to create the final image. Sometimes these works are turned into clutches, jewellery or collages. There are recurring themes such as flora and fauna that emerge from my work, often with a quirky playfulness about them. I also create sculptures using recycled plastic, tape, wire, old fabric or any clean trash I can find that can be used as the core of the piece with a papier mache and plaster covering to create a stone like appearance.
Janicke - The Environment
I am passionate about my art and the environment and my ambition is to continue to limit further environmental impact and to pass on this message to current and future artists. I reuse, reduce and recycle when creating my art and in my day to day life.

Some examples are:
- Turning my old clothing into cleaning cloths, part of my sculptures or giving them to Op Shops
- Collecting packaging and other non recyclable items and creating sculptures out of it
- Minimising my water use by using rain water, using it twice (not clean water each time I wash my paint brushes)
- Painting outside so to use natural light
- Making collages out of dried out paint or painting off cuts.
